Magazines in the store. The official gallery store located at Te Kōputu a te whanga a Toi — the Whakatāne Library and Exhibition Centre — is currently closed. The publications listed below are still available, but are not displayed. Please ask at the front desk for assistance or email arts@whakatane.govt.nz.

A publication that captures images of early Whakatāne. Working out of a stationer’s store on the eastern Strand, as both proprietor and photographer, Caisley captured images of the people and places of early 1900s Whakatāne. His images have helped shape the way we view our District and our past.

Anton van der Wouden, 1994. The ancient volcano, Whale Island is situated 10 km offshore of Whakatāne. The publication looks at its history of short term human occupation, including remnants of Māori presence, and tells tales of trading and skirmish with European travellers in the early 1830s.
