Molly Morpeth Canaday 3D Award - Entry information

The Molly Morpeth Canaday 3D Award has been established as a biennial event to encourage and recognise the quality of creativity found in the area of three-dimensional applied arts. Artists working in sculpture, applied arts, craft or within a three-dimensional focused practice are invited to enter.

These awards have been made possible through the generous support of the Molly Morpeth Canaday Trust, established by Frank Canaday in memory of his wife, Molly Morpeth Canaday. The trust has been a major supporter of the arts in Whakatāne for over 25 years, and Whakatāne Museum and Arts would like to extend its thanks for the trust’s continuing support.

Judge announced

The forthcoming, biennial Molly Morpeth Canaday 3D Award is to be judged by the director of Auckland’s Objectspace, Kim Paton.

Kim Paton is a highly-regarded artist and art academic whose recent work, The Free Store Project, was included in the 29th Biennial of Graphic Arts in Ljubljana, Slovenia. Formerly the Research Leader and lecturer at Wintec’s School of Media Arts, she took up the Director role at Objectspace in 2015.

Ms Paton also holds a first class honours degree in sculpture from Massey University in Wellington and says she is looking forward to her task of evaluating the diverse entries the Molly Morpeth Canaday 3D Art Award.

Awards information

Entries

Stage 1

Entry forms and images must be submitted by Sunday, 26 June at 4:30 pm.

All entrants must submit a high resolution image in either JPG or TIFF file format between 1–3 MB. The images must be of high enough quality to be used in a publication and must be a true and accurate representation of the entries. Please include a minimum of two (2) images per entry to aid in the judging and publication process.

Stage 2

Preliminary finalists will be informed by email on or before Thursday, 14 July of selection. All entries must then arrive at Te Kōputu a te whanga a Toi by Monday, 1 August at 4:30 pm for final judging.

Stage 3

Preliminary finalists will undergo final judging by the sole judge at Te Kōputu a te whanga a Toi. All exhibition finalists will be notified on Wednesday, August 3.

Freighted entrants will officially be received from 9 am Friday, 29 July until 4:30 pm Monday, 1 August.

Opening night

The award winner will be announced at the exhibition opening and award ceremony at Te Kōputu a te whanga a Toi Friday, 5 August 2016 at 6 pm.

Exhibition open to the public

The exhibition will be held at Te Kōputu a te whanga a Toi from 5 August–18 September 2016.

Gallery hours

Te Kōputu a te whanga a Toi – Whakatāne Library and Exhibition Centre is open weekdays 9 am–5 pm and weekends 10 am–2 pm.

Conditions Of Entry

Judging

Works chosen for the exhibition will be from preliminary finalists. The winner will be determined by a sole judge and announced at the opening and award ceremony on Friday, 5 August 2016, 6 pm.

Stage 1

Preliminary finalists not required for the exhibition must collect their artworks from Te Kōputu a te whanga a Toi - Whakatāne Library and Exhibition Centre’s trade entrance by Wednesday, August 10. Appointments must be organised prior to collection. Other freighted works will be sent by Whakatāne Museum and Arts staff on or before Wednesday, August 10.

The decision of the judge will be final, and no correspondence will be entered into.

Entry Fee

The non-refundable entry fee of $35 per entry can be paid by cheque or direct deposit.

Direct deposit payments are to be made into account 01-0434-0334411-00. Place your name in the Particulars Field and MUMMA in the Reference Field.

Cheques are to be made payable to Whakatāne District Council and posted to PO Box 203, Whakatāne.

Execution

All works must be original and must have been executed in the 12 months prior to August 2016. All entries must have been made within New Zealand and cannot have been previously exhibited or displayed in an award or competition.

Presentation

Entries need to be accompanied by the following information:

  • Title, media, dimensions (when installed)
  • Unpacking instructions
  • Pre-paid courier tickets (if applicable)
  • Typed name and return address label
  • Installation instructions
  • List of all components of entry
  • Artist statement (optional)

Any text provided will be final and definitive and will not be added or changed to by the entrant. Whakatāne Museum and Arts reserves the right to edit the text for grammatical errors.

Media/Publicity

All entrants must submit a high resolution image, either in JPG or TIFF file format, between 1–3 MB. The images must be of high enough quality to be used in a publication and/or online platforms and must be a true and accurate representation of the entries. Whakatāne Museum and Arts reserves the right to reproduce the selected entries for advertising and marketing purposes of any form. There will be no entitlement to royalty or other payment for reproduction.

Size

Entries may be any size; however, consideration needs to be given to the cost of transport and the weight of the entry(s).

Installation

All installation, maintenance and operational costs not covered by the normal exhibition services of Whakatāne Museum and Arts are the responsibility of the artist; for example, laptops, monitors, projectors and sound systems.

Exhibition

Whakatāne Museum and Arts reserves the right to select all or any works to be exhibited. All entries will stay on display at Te Kōputu a te whanga a Toi for the entirety of the exhibition.

Packing and Freight

All selected entry(s) need to be suitably boxed or crated in rigid reusable packaging with the return address and name of the sender clearly marked. Delivery to the exhibition venue is the responsibility of the entrant.

All artwork deliveries must be complete with return freight tickets.

Whakatāne Museum and Arts cannot accept responsibility for any loss or damage or deterioration that may occur to entries while in transit.

Insurance

Insurance cover will be only be provided by Whakatāne Museum and Arts whilst entries are on exhibition at Te Kōputu a te whanga a To.

Commission

Works selected for the Awards must be for sale and a commission of 30% (exclusive of GST) will be retained by Whakatāne Museum and Arts in respect of any works sold during the exhibition.

Artists will be requested to provide an invoice for any works sold after September 18 2016. Payment will be made within two calendar months of the closure of the exhibition. Please include wholesale price with your work and GST number if you are registered for GST.

Return of Works

Entrants may collect unsold entries at the end of the exhibition from the trade entrance of Te Kōputu a te whanga a Toi between 10 am and 3 pm Monday, 19 to Wednesday, 21 September 2016.

All unsold entries who request freight will be despatched by Friday, 23 September 2016.

Personal Information

All correspondence between the entrant and Whakatāne Museum and Arts is private and confidential and will not be shared with third parties.

Whakatāne Museum and Arts will not release any information supplied by an entrant to a third party without the prior permission of the entrant.
