Education

We are currently developing our educational programmes for all levels. Although we are not able to offer any specific activities at this time we are more then happy to provide short guided tours to all school groups with prior notice.

Photographic Collection

We have over 20,000 photographs and negatives in our collections, which include significant original material and a rare set of glass plate negatives. We also have a limited computer database available for public use in the Museum Display area.

Collections

From 4 November 2009 our research facility will be available on a limited, and appointment only, basis on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday afternoons from 1.00 – 4.00pm.

Museum DisplaysThe Whakatane Museum has thousands of items in its collections which cover numerous areas including Taonga Maori, Social History, Visual Arts, Photography and Archives.

Our Taonga Maori collection includes significant examples from Ngati Awa, Ngai Tuhoe, Ngati Tuwharetoa, Ngati Rangitihi and Te Whakatohea as well as the Te Kohika collection comprising examples from one of the most important swamp excavations in New Zealand.

 

Archives

The Whakatane District Museum and Gallery holds an extensive collection of archive materials which include historical documents from the Whakatane district and the Bay of Plenty region.
